Best known for being the ''prime architect'' of higher algebraic K-theory. 1978 Award; Pierre René, Viscount Deligne (1944- ) Belgian Mathematician. 1978 award, and Michael Freedman (1951- ) American Mathematician. Awarded a Fields Medal in 1986 for his work on the 4-dimensional generalized Poincaré conjecture.
