CHADWICK JAMES: (1891-1974) English Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics 1935, in recognition of his discovery of the neutron. Chadwick was head of the British team who worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. Two unusual T.Ls.S., `J. Chadwick´, twice, 1st September 1947, to Mr. Corbiere. The first being an oblong 4to page, on The University of Liverpool - Physics Laboratories printed stationery, bearing the University monogramme, and stating `I apologise for my delay in replying to your letter of July 29 and in answering the three questions you put to me. I have been away in Sweden..´. The second being a 4to page, Chadwick responding to each of the three questions of his correspondent. To the last question about his most relevant work, Chadwick states `(a) The Discovery of the neutron. (b) From a purely scientific aspect, the discovery of the neutron and the elucidation of its properties; from a more general aspect, my work during the war on the development of the ''atomic bomb''.
