FRIEDMAN, YITZCHOK
(Admor of Bohush-Shpikov, 1903-92). Autograph postcard (unsigned) written to “Mrs. H. Twersky.”

Discussion of recent family events and finances and a request for updates on the American branch of the family.
Autograph address (and return address) on verso in Latin characters.
Bohush (Buhusi), Romania; November 1928.: 1928

Grand Rabbi Yitzchak Friedman’s maternal grandfather was R. Mordechai Twersky, Admor of Shpikov, a branch of the Skver Chassidic dynasty. Upon his parents’ death from typhus in 1920, he and his brother inherited the Shpikov mantle. Due to Soviet persecution, R. Yitzchak fled from Shpykiv to Bohush (Buhusi, Romania), where his uncle, R. Menachem Mendel Friedman, held court as the third Rebbe of Bohush, a branch of the Ruzhyn Chassidic dynasty. In 1924, R. Yitzchak married R. Menachem Mendel’s daughter, Yocheved Fayga, and eventually inherited the mantle of Bohush as well. He settled in Tel Aviv in 1951 and moved to Bnei Brak in 1987.

This postcard is addressed incorrectly: 3451 Giles Place is in the Bronx, not Brooklyn, and in fact is the address of the Sholom Aleichem Cooperative Association, a Jewish-socialist commune established in the Bronx in 1927. Members of the Twersky family, the Rebbe’s relatives, lived in this cooperative.
