The book was written during the period of the Geonim and it is one of the first Halachic books that were written after the completion of the Talmud. It is considered the most important Halachic book of the Geonim.
However, there was a debate among the Rishonim, who often cited it, as to the its author's identity. Some attributed the composition to Rabbi Yehudai Gaon while others attributed it to Rabbi Shimon Kiara.
On the title page of the book before us, the words of Sefer Mitzvot Gadol are cited: "Rabbi Yehudai Gaon Assa Halachot Gedolot" and on the reverse side of the title page a special article about the author's identity is printed. The book before us contains two scholarly glosses referring to this article by early writers.
The book contains two scholarly glosses in ancient script on leaf 68 (one of them is slightly cut off). An additional gloss is completely cut off. At the end of the book there is an ancient handwritten list by a different writer.
[4], 144 leaves. Illustrated title page.
Condition: Good. Nice, new leather binding. Stains on several leaves. The book has been preserved in a relatively excellent condition.
