Vittorio Gassman, born Vittorio Gassmann (Genoa, 1 September 1922 – Rome, 29 June 2000), was an Italian actor, director, screenwriter and writer, active in theatre, cinema and television.

Nicknamed the Mattatore (from the homonymous television show he hosted in 1959), he is considered one of the best and most representative Italian actors of all time, remembered for his markedly theatrical bearing and diction, as well as for his absolute professionalism (bordering on maniacal), for his versatility and for his magnetism. An artist with deep roots in the world of the most committed theatre, he was the founder and director of the Teatro d'arte Italiano. His long career in Italy and abroad includes important productions, as well as dozens of divertissements that gave him vast popularity.

Along with Alberto Sordi, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi and Marcello Mastroianni, Gassman is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Italian comedy.
