RABBI OVADIA HADAYA, ROSH YESHIVATH HAMEKUBALIM BETH KEL IN YERUSHALAYIM, TWO HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTERS TO RABBI YOSEF HACOHEN SCHWARTZ – NOTED PRE-WWII HUNGARIAN RABBI AND AUTHOR.


Two letters in Sefardic script sent to Rabbi Yosef Hacohen Schwartz, dated 1931 and 1932, containing notes on Rabbi Schwartz’s published works.

Rabbi Ovadia Hadaya (1890-1969), born in Aleppo, Syria, settled in Yerushalayim in 1898, where he studied under the great scholars and kabbalists Rabbi Yitzchak Sherim and Rabbi Yitzchak Alafia. Rosh Yeshiva of Porat Yosef (1923) Dayan of the Sefardic Beth Din (1925), Sefardic Rabbi of Petach Tikva (1939) and Rosh Yeshivas Hamekubalim Beth Kel (1958) in Yerushalayim. Author of eight volumes of Yaskil Avdi.

Rabbi Yosef haCohen Schwartz (1875-1944), son of Rabbi Naftali Schwartz, author of Beis Naftali and Rabbi of Mad. Disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Tenenbaum, author of Naharei Afarsemon, and son-in-law of Rabbi Eliezer Deutsch, Rabbi of Bonyhad and author of Pri Hasadeh and Tevuas Hasadeh. Dayan in Bonyhad and Rabbi of the Machzikei Torah community in Groswardein. Authored a large number of halachic works and edited his father-in-law’s writings for publication. For 20 years he served as editor of the respected rabbinical journal ‘Vayelaket Yosef’ including many of his own contributions.
