Fu uno dei più importanti rappresentanti della bottega di Luca Giordano. Collaborò per diversi anni con il maestro assimilando alla perfezione la sua pittura. Nel 1692, al momento di lasciare Napoli per recarsi presso la Corte di Spagna, Giordano lasciò al fedele Simonelli il compito di concludere le sue opere. In seguito, nello svolgere la sua attività in proprio, in qualità di miglior rappresentante ed erede dell'arte giordanesca, operò a Napoli e nel Sud Italia per circa tre decenni.

He was one of the most important representatives of Luca Giordano's workshop. He collaborated for several years with the master assimilating his painting to perfection. In 1692, when leaving Naples to go to the Court of Spain, Giordano left the task of concluding his artworks to the faithful Simonelli. Later, in carrying out his own business, as the best representative and heir of Jordanian art, he worked in Naples and Southern Italy for about three decades.
