Rare Signed Stone Carving by Amos Supuni (1970-2008)
A hand-carved Zimbabwean stone sculpture by Amos Supuni ( 1970 - 2008). The stone carving measures 7 inches by 4 1/4 inches. It is approximately 8 lbs. It is signed on the underside by the artist. Supuni made his sculptures mostly in the hard springstone, but also used mixed media. Springstone is an exceptionally hard, dark serpentinite stone used in Shona sculpture. Springstone is found in the Tengenenge region of Zimbabwe.
In his work Supuni refers to contemporary social issues of concern and images of joy in daily life. His works rarely come to auction.
