A French ivory figural group depicting Virgin & Child - 19th Century
carved elephant ivory figural group (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 or Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) depicting "Virgin and Child", standing on a marble plinth. The ball that the Child holds in his hand is the same globe depicted as a symbol of power in the portraits of the emperors of Rome and Byzantium; with the diffusion of Christianity it became the globus cruciger. Dimensions 9.2 x 9.2 x 45 cm, sculpture height 36 cm. Total weight 2717 gr. Item condition grading: **** good. Ce.S.Ar. Certificate of antiquity (pre-1947).
