Charles Jacque

Rienz, inspiré de Ribera, 1868
Etching, 12 x 11,2 cm; including a white cardboard passepartout, 55 x 37,5 cm
Rienz, inspiré de Ribera is a wonderful etching realized in 1868 by Charles Jacque (1813-1894).
This is the fifth plate from a suite of eight etchings inspired by Ribera.
This original print representing a smiling young man looking at the observer has an inscription on plate "A.Ribera 1621". From a technical perspective, this plate has a very vast palette of black tones.
Charles-Émile Jacque (1813 – 1894) was a French painter of animals (animalier) and an engraver who, with Jean-François Millet, was part of the Barbizon School. He learned how to engrave maps when he spent seven years in the French Army. It was Millet who advised Charles Jacque to draw inspiration from the artist Ribera "pour se dégager des figures conventionnelles et atteindre des représentations plus fortes et plus vraies de la vie aux champs." (Monselet).
