Claudio Cintoli

One hundred thousand lire
Offset colored lithograph on paper, 44.5 x 85.5 cm
Centomila Lire is an original artwork realized by Claudio Cintoli in the 1970s. Hand-signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right margin. Numbered in Arab numerals on the lower left margin. Edition of 50 prints.

This artwork represents the Italian banknote of one-hundred thousand liras. On the right, there is a portrait of the great Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni with a double face (on the original one-hundred thousand liras there used to be the portrait of Manzoni with an empty space on the left). On the left, there is a pistol aiming towards the portrait of Manzoni. Manzoni is an Italian classical symbol and icon. Together with Dante, Manzoni is considered one of the most important writers in Italy and an innovator of the Italian language. This banknote was issued in Italy from 1967 to 1979, and was designed by the Italian engraver Trento Cionini.

Claudio Cintoli (Imola, 1935 - Rome, 1978) was an Italian artist, painter, and set designer. Together with his family, he moved to Recanati, where he discovered a great passion for art and painting. In 1955, he enrolled in the faculty of Architecture at the University of Rome, but he then decided to dedicate himself to painting and attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. In 1958, he exhibited for the first time at the Civil Palace of Recanati and, during the same year, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Galleria La Medusa, in Rome.
