Neruda, Pablo. "España en el corazón: himno a las glorias del pueblo en guerra" (1936-1937). 1st edition

. Santiago de Chile. Ercilla, 1937. 43 pages. 27 x 20 cm.
Handwritten dedication from Pablo Neruda. “A Margarita Xirgú fraternalmente Pablo Neruda”. At the foot of the page the following address is written in the same handwriting by Neruda: “Calle Merced 268 Santiago”. It is written in black ink, and this dedication is significant as it is for Margarita Xirgú, Federico García Lorca’s muse, and a great actress who performed in his plays. Nothing is known about the relationship between Neruda and Xirgú. The copy is well preserved and bound in leather. The cover is by Pedro Olmos and there are 16 of his photographs in the book. It is explained that this hymn to the glory of the people at war forms part of the third volume of Residencia en la Tierra (Residence on Earth), and 2.000 copies of the edition were published. An inscripton at the end of the book states “This book was begun in Madrid, 1936, and continued in Paris and at sea, 1937.” In very good condition.
