1 -Handwritten letter in green ink from Pablo Neruda addressed to Mr. Robert Bennet, in Los Angeles, California. 3 folio sheets written on one side. 27 x 22 cm. Dated 26th October 1971. In the letter he explains how nervous he is about receiving the Nobel Prize for literature in December (1971). He presumes that, from that time onwards, he will have enough money to buy the Shakespeare play and he will be able to make payments of 1,000 dollars every month until the full amount is paid. He points out, with irony, that he is a bibliophile, but a poor one, and he needs Bennet to sell him this Shakespeare play under these conditions. The postmarked envelope accompanies the letter, sent from Paris on the same day as he wrote the latter, 26th October 1971.
2 -Typewritten letter on yellowish paper. 29x22 cm. An answer from Mr. Bennet, dated 1st November 1971, in which, after congratulating the poet on his Nobel Prize for Literature, he agrees to the terms proposed by Neruda and suggests lowering the total price of the play to 5,500 dollars instead of the 7,500 originally agreed on, to make it easier for him to purchase the book.
