Neruda, Pablo. “Versainograma a Santo Domingo”. 1966.

1 p. 35 x 22 cm.
Loose pamphlet folded in half with the Versainograma a Santo Domingo by Pablo Neruda, dated in Isla Negra in 1966. This is a harsh and critical poem against political tyranny and the United States. The poem revisits the history of the Caribbean Island of Santo Domingo from the time Columbus discovered it. It highlights the tyrannies that, in his opinion, it has suffered from, particularly emphasising he figure of the dictator Trujillo. He goes over the brief period of the president of the Dominican Republic, Juan Bosch, and finally he attacks the United States, their president of the time Lyndon Johnson and the American marines who occupied the island when they feared that communism would spread through the Caribbean and the rest of the Americas.
