Oil paint on canvas depicting boy with donkey, Alessandro Abate (Catania, 1867 - Catania, 1953). Signed and dated 1911 on the lower right. Alessandro Abate, Sicilian multifaceted artist, took the first steps of his artistic training in Catania where, from 15 to 18 years, attended the course in drawing and painting, taught by the realist painter Antonino Gandolfo.
Later he moved to Naples, he studied at the Institute of Fine Arts under the guide of the professor Vincenzo Marinelli and in Rome, in 1893, he obtained, by the Municipality of Catania, a scholarship for an advanced course, governed by the professor Iacovacci.
He participated to numerous exhibitions, national and international, including those of Rome (1894), Palermo (1895), Milan (1897), Turin (1902), Santiago (1906) and the Sicilian farm, located in Piazza d'Armi , today Piazza Giovanni Verga, inaugurated in Catania on 14 April 1907.
In 1927 he obtained the grand prix Exhibition of Beaux Arts in Paris and from 1929 to 1931 he worked and exhibited at the Fair of Tripoli.

The world of the poor people is studied by the painter, which portrays a simple country boy with donkey, depicted during his everyday life. The artist leads a psychological analysis of the character through the clever use of the light and brushwork, thick and pasty.
