“Madonna and Child”. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Colonial School. Peru or Guatemala. 16th - 17th century.
Marvellous depiction of the Madonna and Child. Mary is in a vertical position, with one leg a little raised and slightly counter-posed. She is dressed in clothing of the nobility, and of special note is her beautiful cape with its gilded interior, polychromed with large red, gilt and green flowers and edged with a border which emulates precious stones. Wearing a small crown, her hair is partly pulled back and falls down her back and over her shoulder, forming long, wavy locks. Her face is serene and lovely, she holds the Child in her left hand. She stands on a magnificent carved and gilded plinth edged with scrolls.
