INTERESTING LETTER! RABBI SHAUL FRIEDENTHAL, RABBI OF BONYHAD, TO RABBI ELIYAHU MENACHEM GOITEIN, RABBI OF HÖGYESZ, REGARDING A DIVORCE DOCUMENT WHICH HAD BEEN CRITICISED BY RABBI AMRAM YAAKOV KATZ. 1867. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER.

A most interesting letter from Rabbi Shaul Friedenthal, Rabbi of Bonyhad, to Rabbi Eliyahu Menachem Goitein, Rabbi of Högyesz, regarding a divorce document that had been criticised by Rabbi Amram Yaakov Katz. Rabbi Friedenthal strongly defends his position and brings support from Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Heller and numerous other contemporary authorities. He concludes with an interesting statement that if the Chasam Sofer would still be alive, he would have raised this matter with him ‘ as the world was not hefker’ and ‘I am not sure if he would not have placed a ban on him [for this] ... but now there is no ruler; everyone in his town considers himself as if he is the prince of Israel and nobody can tell him what to do...’.

Rabbi Shaul Friedenthal (1803-1883), son of Rabbi Leib Lissa, Dayan of Rechnitz and son-in-law of Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Meisels of Ergesag. Rosh Beth Din of Bonyhad.

Rabbi Eliyahu Menachem Goitein (1838-1902), son of Rabbi Zvi Hirsh - Rabbi of Högyesz and son-in-law of Rabbi Yerachmiel Dov Berish Banet Moreh Tzedek of Lipto-szt-Miklos. Disciple of the Ksav Sofer, Rabbi Yochanan Spitz – Rabbi of Tab and of Rabbi Avraham Paper – Dayan of Tab. Succeeded his father as Rabbi of Högyesz in 1860. Responsa and other rabbinic writings published in Zichron Avos.

4 sides. 21 x 34 cm. Very good condition.
