Couple of paintings
Oil on canvas, cm. 33,5x25. Framed
This couple of refined small canvases with a sacred theme is characterized by the quick and sure brushstroke, the wisely concise definition of the forms, the effective narrative conciseness and the calibrated chromatic palette, which on the brown base makes small notes of bright and contrasting color ring out. Here it is easy to recognize the hand of Ippolito Scarsella known as Scarsellino, the greatest painter active in Ferrara between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. Strict similarities in style link this pair of paintings to the Adoration of the Shepherds at the Retreat of San Pellegrino in Bologna, to the series of the Mysteries of the Rosary in the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Bondeno and to the series of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary on the sides of the Immaculate Conception with the Trinity of the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Ferrara and which was destroyed during the bombing of Palazzo dei Diamanti in 1944.
