This composition of rare formal balance and expressive intensity, ideally refers to the still lifes of Francisco Zurbaran. The silently meditative atmosphere, the chastened stylistic register, the subtle virtuosity in the meticulous calibration of the chromatic palette, played mainly on brown tones, derive from the rare bodegones of Zurbaran (think of the Basket of Oranges at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena or the Four Containers on a table in the Prado Museum in Madrid), and from the more prosaic version given by his son Juan (Basket of apples and melogany from the Museu Nacional de Catalunya in Barcelona, Still life with chocolate service, from the Museum of Western and Oriental Art of Kiev).
