Alessandro Ziliani (Busseto 1906, Milano 1977)

Alessandro Ziliani, born June 3, 1906 in Busseto, died February 12, 1977 in Milan. He studied in Milan with tenor Alfredo Cecchi. His debut was in 1929 in "Madama Butterfly" at the Dal Verme in Milan, and was successful enough that Ziliani obtained a contract to record "La traviata" His Master's Voice for the following year (with Anna Rosza and Luigi Borgonovo). That same year, 1930, he made a concert tour in the Netherlands, hoping to get a contract with the Italian Opera Company on tour, which he did in 1931. He sang in "La Boheme, " "La Traviata, " "Tosca" "Rigoletto" and "Lucia" in the Netherlands. In 1932, was a great success as Rodolfo in Parma, and in 1934, he made his debut at La Scala in "La Gioconda" (with Cigna, Stignani and Galeffi), and Arena di Verona, in "Lucia" (with Dal Monte and Armando Borgioli). It will be one of the pillars of the scale for several years, by creating "Mary of Egypt" by Respighi. Other important appearances at La Scala were the main roles in "Louise", "Francesca da Rimini", "Mefistofele" and "Madama Butterfly". Other discs of HMV were made in those years. In 1938, he was in the United States, singing in San Francisco with Mafalda Favero (his wife). He was also a regular guest in Nazi Germany, singing mainly in Berlin, Monaco and Vienna, and they even filmed, "Liebeslied", in two versions, German and Italian. (His German diction was impeccable, probably the best German and an Italian singer has ever reached). In 1942, also he passed to a German record company, Telefunken. She also sang in the operetta in Germany. After World War II, even he sang a few years in Italy; what seems to be the last witness of his voice is a live recording of the 1952 ' "Armida" by Gluck with Callas. Shortly after, Ziliani abandoned singing and became one of the most important agents of Italian singers (Moose was the name of his agency).
