JOSEFO (Flávio)

HISTOIRE des Juifs. Traduit du Grec par Monsieur Arnauld d’ Andilly. Troisième Édition. A Paris: Chez Pierre le Petit, 1670.

2 v.; [12], 772, [54] pp., 1 grav.; [24], XXXVI, 520, [44, 2 br.] pp.: il.; 385 mm. Contemporary full calf in bad condition; red edges; stained; wormholes on the bottom margins of the first folios of second volume; lacking the 3 folding maps of the second volume.

Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian of the 1st century, from a very young age became famous as a Pharisee from the age of 19. In 64, he went on an embassy to Rome, in order to obtain the grace of some priests condemned by the pro-consul Felix, in which he was successful. He organized resistance to the invading Romans in Galilee, and was captured in the fortress of Jotapata in 67. A prisoner of Vespasian, he predicted the empire, which won him freedom and the favor of the new monarch and his son Titus, from whom he took the nickname Flávio. From then on he was very dedicated to both and to the Roman cause. This work of his, which went through several editions over time, is considered one of the main sources for the knowledge of the Jewish religion in the time of Jesus Christ. This large-format edition, one of the most esteemed French translations at the time, comprises two volumes, the first with Jewish Antiquities and the second with the History of the War against the Romans. The first volume is illustrated with 6 engravings in the text and an extra-text. The second volume should be illustrated with 3 maps missing from this copy. Very rare.
