Signed and dated in the lower left corner: “Arie Smit/ Bali '87”.
Provenance: ambassador Gerardo Carante.
After completing graphic studies in Rotterdam, in 1938 Arie Smit joined the Dutch Navy and moved to Batavia, devoting himself mainly to engraving topographical maps of the archipelago. During the war he was forced to forced labor by Japanese invaders, choosing at the end of the conflict to acquire Indonesian citizenship. He spent the rest of his life in Bali, painting works with bright colors and mainly dedicated to the island life, and founding a school frequented by many students. His works can be found in the major museums of Southeast Asia.
