Joseph Shapotshnik (b. 1882), born in Kishinev, where he was apparently considered a child prodigy. Settled in London, where he became renowned for his scholarship and for his medicinal cures. Amongst other schemes, he planned to publish a new edition of the Talmud Babli including all previously published commentaries plus those of contemporary rabbinical scholars. But he was harshly condemned and placed in Cherem by leading international rabbinical figures for his claims to permit the re-marriage of agunos, and was also sharply criticised by London rabbis for some of his other activities.
