Cabinet sobre mesa en madera de ébano y madera ebonizada, piedras duras, latón y hueso. Italia, Florencia, segunda mitad S. XIX

Cabinet on table, in ebony wood and ebonized wood, hard stones, brass and bone.

Italy, Florence, second half S. XIX

Measures 154 x 42 x 84 cm

Architecturally structured cabinet with a wide variety of hard stones and marbles. It rests on four bronze sphinxes. It articulates its drawers from a central cover of classic design flanked by two columns with chiseled bronze bases and capitals that reveal as many drawers inside.

This piece of furniture evokes the famous production of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure founded in Florence in 1588 by the Grand Duke Fernando I de' Medici. This organism became famous for the use of hard and semi-precious stones such as agate, chalcedony, lapis lazuli, malachite, etc. Generally inserted in an ebony frame. These pieces of furniture were the inspiration for those made in the 19th century, produced both by the Opificio and by other Florentine workshops such as Pasquale Leoncini and Andrea Picchi.
