"The Apparition of the Virgin of the Pillar to Saint James"
Oil on canvas. 81 x 109 cm.
The painting was originally conceived as a sketch for a larger painting. This is magnificent canvas, with great chromatic and compositive beauty. The figures are arranged in a superposition of visual planes, which gives perspective and depth, as in the sketch of the dome above the Holy Chapel by Antonio González Velázquez, belonging to the collection at the Cabildo Metropolitano de Zaragoza (Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, Zaragoza). With its soft, delicate and smudgy brush strokes, impregnated with a chromatic palette based on pastel tones and delicate golds that light up some areas and darken others, it also has strong similarities to many other paintings from the final phase of the rococo period in Zaragoza, for example, the canvas of the Coming of the Virgin of the Pillar to Zaragoza in the Diocesan Museum of Teruel, linked to a supposed sketch by Goya which has not been preserved.
