Francesco Piranesi (Rome 1758 - Paris 1810), 'La Grotta di Posillipo', late 18th century - Important etching from a drawing by Jean Louis Desprez (Auxerre 1743 - Stockholm 1804). A watercoloured specimen is now in the British Museum in London; there is an inscription at the bottom: 'La grotta di Posillipo, cioè via sotterranea scavata nel vivo sasso per la lunghezza di più di due stadj fra Napoli e Pozzuolo pratticata dagli antichi per comodo della via littorale ad evitar la salita del monte'.At the bottom are the signatures 'L.
