Rare Okpoho style bracelet from South East Nigeria in Bronze used as currency for the slave trade, West Africa, 18th century
In bronze, measurements: 7.5 x 8.5 cm. The Manilla is a form of money, usually made of bronze or copper, used in West Africa. They were produced in large numbers and in a wide range of designs, sizes and weights. Already in widespread use before the colonial period, perhaps through centuries of trade with the Portuguese Empire, the manilla continued to serve as money and a decorative object until the late 1940s and is still used as an ornament in some contexts.
