The infanta María Teresa was the last daughter of Felipe IV and his first wife, Isabel de Borbón. She was born in El Escorial on September 20, 1638, so when Velázquez portrayed her she would have been about 15 years old. Between the years 1652-53 – this young woman was the heir to the throne of Spain since there was no male child, although her father was remarried to Mariana of Austria and a daughter had been born from this marriage: Margarita María, the infanta protagonist of Las Meninas. However, Felipe IV had hopes of obtaining the long-awaited man for which María Teresa would be offered in marriage to the different European monarchies. Finally Margaret will marry the French King Louis XIV in 1660, Diego Velázquez himself participating in the delivery of the hand of the Spanish infanta.
