Copy of a special bill signed by Justice Malkiel Manny.
An official copy of a very interesting rental contract signed by Malkiel Manny, the first Jewish judge in the Supreme Court under the British Mandate in Palestine.
Justice Yitzhak Malkiel Manny (1860 - 1932) was the first Jewish judge in the Supreme Court under the British Mandate in Palestine. Born in Hebron, the fourth son of the Gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Eliyahu Meni zt "l, from his early years was a student of his father in his yeshiva in Hebron, in 1901 he moved to Jerusalem and opened an independent law firm. At first his clients were from Hebron and the nearby villages, but he was soon elected to represent many of the foreign missions in Palestine and the Ashkenazi Council of Jerusalemites. His name and knowledge spread throughout the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Abdul Hamid II offered to appoint him to the judge, but Manny rejected his offer. He was then elected by the Sultan to represent him in the protection of his lands ("Jiftlik"). His appointment was supported by the Chief Rabbi of Turkey and the Governor of Jerusalem, to the dismay of Muslim clerics. After the conquest of the Land of Israel by the British, and during the period of British military rule, was appointed in 1918 to the Supreme Court of the Mandatory government. At the beginning of 1922, he was chosen to serve until 1929 as a judge in the Tel Aviv-Jaffa District Court. During his years in Tel Aviv he advised the Chief Rabbinate.
Jerusalem, 1903.
