1622
Rare first Dutch edition of one of the older standard handbooks for artists, abundantly illustrated. Bolten, Method and Practice, Dutch and Flemish Drawing Books 1600-1750, p.169: "Albrecht Durer was profoundly engaged in theoretical matters (...) several 'chapters' prepared by him were published as separate treatises, the most famous being his Vier Bucher von menschlicher Proportion, which appeared in 1528. Durer's exertions with the theory of proportions resulted in the most extensive of all such undertakings by artists and mark the climax in the development of his theory."; PMM 54 (together with 2 other works by Durer "the accepted aesthetic dogma until the nineteenth century"); Besterman p.34, note; Fairfax Murray, German 152-153 (Latin ed.); Bierens de Haan 1274; Katalog Berlin 4660 (German editions 1528 and 1603); Graesse II, p.452; cf. Sammlung Otto Schafer 80 (ed. 1528): "Als er [Durer] zu Beginn des 16.
