Postcard of the Tzaddik of Shtefenesht, Romania, 1930s
Postcard of the Tzaddik of Shtefenesht with Yiddish and Romanian captions. Rabbi Avraham Matisyahu Friedman (1823-1933) was a grandson of Rabbi Yisrael of Ruzhin. He succeeded his father at the age of 22. He led his court in Shtefenesht for 64 years. Romanian Jewry looked to him as a righteous and holy person, and even the gentiles called him ʺMarele Rabinʺ - the great rabbi, as per the caption. His grave served as a pilgrimage site until 1969 when his bones were transferred to Israel. Worming holes, creases, stains, moderate condition.
