Rare Photograph of the Chazon Ish Checking Seeds in the Fields of Yad-Binyamin
Rare photograph of the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, author ofֲ Chazon Ish, in his old age, checking seeds in the 'Netivah' farm (later Moshav Yad-Binyamin).
As is known, the Chazon Ish held the religious settlement movement close to his heart. He would advise them and decide their halachic uncertainties. Before us is a rare photograph illustrating this more than anything: The Chazon Ish, towards his old age, accompanied by an entourage of rabbis and farmers, troubled himself despite his age, to go out to the fields, on foot, to a place where cars cannot reach. All this to examine the seeds in the ground, to determine whether they sprouted in the sixth year, in which case the entire field is permitted, or whether they sprouted in the seventh year, and the sanctity of shemittah applies to the entire field, so that it may not be used for commerce.
Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz [1879-1954], known by the name of his book, as the author ofֲ Chazon Ish, was a gaon and a tzaddik, expert in all realms of Torah, reviver of the Torah world after the Holocaust. One of the leaders of the Chareidi public in the Land of Israel, and one of the drafters of its path in the period following the establishment of the State. The Chazon Ish was the person who raised the injustice done to Shemittah and took special action to infuse broad consciousness of fulfillment of Land-of-Israel-dependent mitzvahs, especially in the new Yishuv. He invested a lot of his time and energy teaching practical halachahs of these commandments.
[1] black-and-white photograph. 9x8 cm. Serrated edges. Explanatory notation on the back of the photograph. More material included with this lot. Fine condition. Minimal creases and a tiny tear in the upper right margin.
