The book of travels in the land of the Caucasus [and its Jewish communities], by the traveler-writer Yosef Yehuda Tcharni - St. Petersburg, 1884

Tcharni's memoirs were printed in the newspapers of the time, and include an very valuable treasure about the life of the Jewish communities in the Caucasus. Tcharni revealed information that was not known from any other source. Some of his memories are presented here in the book before us. We will mention as one of many examples one of the things known only from Tcharni's memoir published in the press at the time: the forgotten character of Rabbi Ze'ev Wolf Trumpeldor, father of Yosef Trumpeldor, and a battalion commander who served for many years in the Tzar's army. Almost the only information we have about Zeev Wolf is from memoirs written about him by Tcharni. Such important pieces of information are scattered throughout the book before us, and some of them relate to the unique and surprising way in which the Caucasians marked the jewish festivals.

זכרונותיו של טשארני נדפסו בעיתוני התקופה, וכוללים אוצר בלתי יסולא בפז על חיי הקהילות היהודיות בקווקז. טשארני חשף מידע שלא היה ידוע משום מקור אחר. חלק מזכרונותיו מובאים כאן בספר שלפנינו. נציין כדוגמה אחת מיני רבות את אחד מהדברים הידועים רק מתוך זכרונותיו של טשארני שפורסמו אז בעיתונות: דמותו הנשכחת של ר' זאב וולף טרומפלדור, אביו של יוסף טרומפלדור, וקטנוניסט ששירת שנים רבות בצבא הצאר. המידע כמעט היחיד שיש לנו על זאב וולף הוא מזכרונות שכתב עליו מיודעו טשארני. פיסות מידע חשובות כאלה פזורות למכביר בספר שלפנינו, ומהן נוגעות לאופן הייחודי והמפתיע שבו ציינו הקווקזים את מועדי ישראל.
