A QAJAR BRASS KASHKUL (BEGGAR'S BOWL)
Qajar, Iran, Ca.18th-19th century AD. A brass kashkul of traditional boat-like form with gently upturned ends and raised on a short oval foot. The brass body is finely engraved with bands of inscription and vegetal ornament. A prominent cartouche of elegant nasta'liq script wraps around the upper shoulder, invoking blessings and possibly quoting devotional poetry or supplication, while the field below is densely filled with stylised interlacing floral medallions and leafy sprays enclosed in pointed cartouches. The terminals are fitted with suspension loops through which the original, heavy-gauge brass carrying chain is attached. The underside is similarly worked, featuring a central escutcheon surrounded by further floral motifs in a radiating scheme. For similar see: Christie's, Live Auction 21892, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds including Rugs and Carpets, Lot 61.Size: 220mm x 150mm; Weight: 730gProvenance: Property of a London Islamic art specialist collector; previously in a collection formed since the 1980s.
