A SAMANID SLIP-PAINTED POTTERY BOWL
Eastern Iran or Central Asia, Ca. 10th - 11th century AD. An earthenware bowl with slip-painted decoration under a transparent glaze. This bowl features Kufic inscriptions spaced rhythmically around the interior wall. The angular script, typical of early Islamic calligraphy, is painted in alternating black and red beneath a clear glaze. The use of stylised script as the central decorative element exemplifies the Islamic aesthetic of balancing word and form. Largely complete, with minor areas of plaster fill.Size: 210mm x 65mm; Weight: 350gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
