AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF THE CHURNING OF THE OCEAN (SAMANDA MANTHAN)
Probably Bandi, India, Ca. 18th century AD. A painting in gouache and gold on paper, illustrating the mythological event of Samudra Manthan, where the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churn the cosmic ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod, supported by Kurma, the tortoise incarnation of Vishnu. The gods and demons are depicted on either side, pulling the serpent Vasuki as the rope, rendered with expressive features and adorned in traditional jewellery and dhotis. Above them, Lord Vishnu is enthroned on a blooming lotus, overseeing the divine act. The lush green background is populated with celestial beings, sacred animals, and symbolic vessels, framed within a bold red border.Size: 175mm x 130mm; Weight: 10gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
