A FINE OTTOMAN QIBLA INDICATOR WITH A DEPICTION OF THE MASJID AL-HARAM
Ottoman Turkey, Ca. AD 18th - 19th century . A fine qibla of circular form, the gilt-brass case engraved to the exterior with a six-petaled floral motif within concentric circles, opening to reveal a finely painted interior. The upper lid exquisitely decorated with a detailed depiction of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, the Kaaba at its center, surrounded by colonnades and minarets, rendered in gold, green, and earthy tones, encircled by a floral border of stylised blooms and foliage. The lower compartment contains a qibla indicator, a meticulously illustrated compass dial delineating the cardinal directions in Arabic script, the central section adorned with a schematic representation of the Kaaba, with radiating blue pointers marking the directions, all enclosed by an intricate band of calligraphy providing geographical and religious inscriptions.
