Mukhalad Al Mukhtar (Iraq, 1948 - Austria 2017) Iraq Baghdad, 1999Acrylic on canvas 100 X 70 cm
Born in Mosul in 1948, he graduated from the Baghdad Academy of Fine Arts in 1973 and obtained a second diploma from the Academy of Rome, where he continued his studies. During his career, Mukhalad took part in several group exhibitions in Europe and won numerous awards. This canvas summarises the history of Iraq in layers: in the lowest levels, the earliest in chronological terms, are filled with friezes and hieroglyphics vividly coloured wheel and window and the eyes of a sphinx. The reference here is clearly the Assyro-Babylonian tradition that affected the area. The upper part of the canvas is instead dedicated to the Islamic tradition that followed it, with calligraphic friezes in foliate kufic and cursive. Dated and signed in Arabic lower left and on the reverse side in Latin characters.
