ZUMBACH JAN: (1915-1986) Polish-Swiss fighter ace of World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. A portion of a D.S., J Zumbach, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. (April 1942). The typed document, evidently clipped from a combat report, states, in part, 'I was leading my Squadron at a height of 12,000 ft. when……I saw 12 F.W. 190s on my right……The E[nemy] A[ircraft] dived down towards the bombers as I ordered by Sqdn. to attack them. I gave the 1st and 2nd F.W. 190 a short burst from 300 yards in order to head them off. The whole enemy formation then turned to the left and up and were engaged by 315 Sqdn……The E/A then turned left and went straight up. I fired at him again from 300 yards when he gave a half roll and I fired as it was upside down. He then dived down spinning to earth and I followed…….I gave him more bursts. I finally left at 10,000 ft. (as I noticed that I was below the height of the bombers), the E/A still spinning slowly to earth…..When I turned towards the bombers I was met head-on by 4 Me.109 flying about 100 ft. above, who opened fire from 100 yards……I claim 1 F.W. 190 probably destroyed'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG
The text relates to the probable destruction of a Focke-Wulf F.W. 190 five miles from Lille, France, on 27th April 1942.
