HISTORIC ITEM! PROTEST BY LEADING HUNGARIAN ORTHODOX RABBIS AGAINST THE STATUTES OF THE HUNGARIAN JEWISH CONGRESS OF 1869, AND CALL FOR PROTEST LETTERS. WITH SEVERAL MANUSCRIPT LINES BY RABBI AHRON DAVID DEUTSCH, RABBI OF GYARMAT AND AUTHOR OF GOREN DAVID. BUDAPEST 1870.

Printed broadside. Letter of protest against the statutes introduced by the reformers at the Hungarian Jewish Congress of 1869. The protest letter is signed by Hungary’s leading orthodox rabbis and was sent to all Hungarian communities to be filled in with the name of the local rabbi or community leader, to be presented to the government authorities by the legal representatives of the orthodox communities. The letter also appeals for financial support for the campaign to protect orthodox Jewish life in Hungary.

This copy of the protest letter includes several lines in the handwriting of Rabbi Ahron David Deutsch, Rabbi of Gyarmat and author of Goren David. This copy is addressed to the honourable gevir R. Michael Tauber of Ir Chadash [Novemesto].

Rabbi Ahron David Deutsch (c. 1812-1878), a disciple of Rabbi Leib Glogau in Prague and of the Chasam Sofer – to whom he was especially close. Rabbi of Shebesh (1846), and Gyarmat (1851). Author of Goren David.
